Youth & Family Services

What are Youth & Family Services?

Our Youth and Family Services aim to strengthen relationships and community connection through encouraging and inspiring participants to make the changes they want for themselves, their family and their community.

Who is it for?

Young people aged 12-17 years and/or their parent/carer who are residents of the Tweed, Byron and Ballina Shires. There is no cost for this service.

How do we support young people and their families?

Young people and families are supported either as a family or individually.

We identify participant’s strengths and develop goals that specify how they would like things to be. Once goals are identified we work together to create a support plan, outlining how we can assist participants to achieve their goals.

The support plan is driven by the needs of the young person and/or their family and can include: advise, relationships and parenting skills development, providing information about services and helping to access those services.

We also provide a range courses and other support options for young people in schools and the community and parenting courses for parents/carers.

When and Where?

Youth and Family workers can meet with young people and families at our centres in Tweed Heads, Tweed Heads South, Murwillumbah, Ocean Shores, Ballina or in schools, homes and other agreed locations.

Parenting Courses

Tuning in to Teens

A course for parents/carers of teenagers 12–17 year olds. Tuning in to Teens aims to help you and your adolescent manage the many emotional challenges of this stage of life. We will explore how to manage your own and your adolescent’s emotions in ways that support you to remain close and keep communicating. By learning these skills, you are less likely to have as much conflict within your family and your teen is more likely to talk to you about the challenging issues they face. 6 x 2 hour sessions.

What you are saying...

“Before starting this course, I was worried about my teens all the time. I didn’t know what to say without upsetting or embarrassing them or causing a meltdown. Doing Tuning into Teens has given the tools to be able to communicate with my kids in such a way they feel heard. I enjoyed learning about how the teenage brain works, especially the ‘flip your lid’, as well as how to pick up on subtle cues and tap into their emotions. The material was easy to understand and put into practice. I am feeling calmer and more confident.”
