Suicide is hurting our young people, families and community. It’s time for us to come together to talk, learn, heal and lead change.

This is a gathering for Aboriginal, Torres Strait and South Sea Islander community members, who want to be part of creating change. At this gathering you will find out about the programs that are strengthening other communities and turning the tide on suicide. Help decide how we as a community can strengthen our own Mob. Funding will be made available to instigate some of the actions decided upon at this gathering.

OnWednesdayApril 17 the Murwillumbah Farmers Market is celebrating 8 years of bringing local and regional produce to the community. To celebrate children will be making an art installation with clay guided by a local artist. The Family Centre’s Kid Space will also be providing fun craft activities assisted by the Bollywood Sisters, who will be helping to fundraise for new chairs in the Kid Space.

Last week 15 young had a VIP tour around the event site of the Quiksilver Pro including the VIP area accompanied by Jeff Hakman, former world surfing champion and co-founder of Quiksilver brand. The young people were able to ask questions and see what goes on behind the scenes on the pro surfing circuit and gain an insight into the life of a pro surfing athlete.
 
The young people formed new friendships during the tour and found some new surfing buddies. The tour wrapped up nicely with a meet and greet with the Quiksilver team where there was an opportunity for selfies and autographs.  Thank you to Quiksilver and Surf Dive n Ski for this awesome opportunity.

At times parents can feel lost or without a clue about what our child might need from us. Imagine what it might feel like if you were able to make sense of what your child was really asking from you. The Circle of Security Parenting program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.
 
Each term The Family Centre run Circle of Security Parenting courses. The 7 week course helps parents identify their children’s emotional needs, and respond to their behavior in ways which results in greater resilience, better relationships and improved self-esteem for their child.
 
This term the course run in Tweed was the first course with an equal number of mum and dad participants.
 
Throughout the course the group shared their experiences around parenting, as well as parenting after separation. The group found it beneficial hearing the challenges and highlights of parenting from both the men and women in the group – giving them insight to what it may look like for the other parent.
 
Participants of the course said that Circle of Security Parenting had not only helped their relationship with their children but has also strengthened other key relationship they have – it’s not just a parenting course, it’s the key to building strong relationships.
 
The key message that many of the participants took from the course is that its never too late to change and become the parent you want to be.

The course was great allowed me to learn a lot about being there for my daughter and being the father that I want to be.
 
Change is not possible without support. The gift of this course is the experience of support to learn and practice new ways of being with our children, and with each other. And the resources are very helpful.
 
I will highly recommend this course this course to a lot of people.

Last Saturday a crew of dedicated volunteers and David Keay,Board Member of The Family Centre, sizzled 60kg of sausages raising over $2500 for The Family Centre’s Creating Opportunities Fund. A big thank you to our BBQ team and Bunnings at South Tweed Heads for supporting The Family Centre.
