Young Mum’s to Be is a 6-week course for women aged 21 years or under. The course is interactive information sessions with practical exercises, group discussions and brainstorming.Discussion topics include: healthy relationships, birthing positions, bonding, pregnancy health, physical changes, nutrition and feeding and trusting your body. The Family Centre run this course in partnership with NSW Health’s Childbirth and Early parent Education Coordinator, Ann Maree Bernauer. The course is codesigned each term in partnership with all the participants. At the beginning of the first session, the young women come up with a number of topics they would like to cover during the 6 weeks together. Pregnancy, labour and childbirth are often the front-runners, but we also have covered topics on wellbeing, breastfeeding, changing bodies, changing relationships, post-natal depression, healthy eating, bring babies home, supports in our communities, alcohol/drugs and mindfulness. This term the young women participating visited the Women’s Care Unit at the hospital. The young women had an opportunity to explore and familiarise themselves with the unit, where they will birth their own babies in the coming weeks and months. The group will gather towards the end of the year again and meet each other’s babies – 6 boys and 1 girl will be welcomed in the world with lots of love. |
